"Dear Herman" from Letters To Angola OST (2009, remixed in 2015) for marimba, violin, viola, double bass and piano.
This piece was written for the opening of the film; the sequence depicts two pen pals, one in prison, writing their letters and explaining their situations. For this the music had to be sparse enough to allow the dialogue to be heard, to give clear identities to the two characters, whilst reflecting the jarring nature of the subject matter. I also wanted to give an impression of the seemingly endless feeling of Herman's own confinement in the constantly repeating, yet never fully satisfied, rhythmic patterns in the marimba.
